Reflections of A Makeup Artist

Just last night I was reflecting over some of the photos of weddings past that I have accumulated from my brides. For the first time I truly saw the happiness, fear, nervousness and anticipation in their faces. When I'm in the moment, in the final few hours before the big moment happens I'm completely focused on getting everyone ready and when I look back at the photos I'm critiquing my work. So, when I sat down and truly LOOKED at the photos last evening it brought a tear to my eye.

It came to me that I am in every single picture with the bride. The groom isn't in every picture, the cake isn't in every picture, the bridesmaids aren't in every picture and neither is the grand spread they so carefully planned out for their guests.....But, in every picture of the bride I right there with her, reflected in her face.

Of course the day isn't about me or even about the makeup, but it is largely about the bride. I cannot even put words into what great joy I get just knowing that I made her feel beautiful, look her best and every time she picks up her wedding photos to flip through them she'll be thinking how amazing she looked.

I just truly love each and every one of my brides. I will never forget their faces, the way each of them has such a unique spirit that you feel through the photos. I think about them often and wonder where int he world they are and if they are still happily married.

If you had asked me six years ago where I'd be right now I would not have believed this. I would not have believed how much happiness putting makeup on strangers brings me...and hopefully them as well.

North Carolina Destination Wedding

I took my first trip to the Hawkesdene House in Andrews North Carolina this week. What a cute little town and beautiful setting. This little town is just about half an hour past the Ocoee River area. I had the pleasure of making the scenic drive there and makeup the wedding party for the big day. I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful road trip or a more beautiful group of girls.

Destination weddings don't always have to be in the Bahamas or exotic places. This couple originated from Florida and Ohio and decided to have a cute little countryside wedding in Andrews. Such a cute idea...I am seeing more and more couples doing these quaint destination weddings.

There seems to be only one problem. How do you find a makeup artist in North Carolina....Andrews in particular...or Cherokee...or Pigeon Forge...you get the point. I am looking forward to another little know destination to add to my calendar. If you are searching for a makeup artist, I hope you'll find me :)

Photos of the beautiful day are soon to come!

Summer Time Makeup Melt Down

If you live in Chattanooga, or anywhere else in the South for that matter you are probably struggling with Summer makeup melt down. This can be distressing to brides in particular. The last thing you want is makeup retreating from it's rightful place while saying I do and saying cheese.

This issue is such a concern for not only my private clients, but also for my brides. So, I have compiled a list of my must have products to prevent makeup melt down. Enjoy!

All Nighter - This makeup setting spray is the bomb! Wedding day to night you'll be perfect.

De Slick - No more T Zone oiliness. This stuff really keeps you matte.

Blotting Papers - Blotting papers will absorb shine and oil without removing makeup. Then you can follow with a little T Zone touch up of your favorite powder. Here is one of mine...

Pressed Powder

Preparing For Your Wedding Day

Many of my bridal clients ask me how to prepare themselves for the wedding day. Questions range from when should I have my brows done to how far ahead of time should I get my spray tan. Rather than recreate the wheel I decided to search for good articles already out there. I found a lot of bad beauty advice before coming accross this simple, sound bit of advice. The below article covers everything from how to take care or your skin to how to prevent getting sick during this time of joy and stress.

I hope you find this helpful :)

I learn something new every day

Working in the wedding industry I learn something new every day. The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that every woman's perception becomes a makeup artist's reality. One bride's  idea of a smokey eye is another bride's idea of barely there. Every woman has a specific vision for her wedding makeup look....even if she says she doesn't.

It is incredibly hard to produce the perfect look for someone that says they love a red lip and once you have red lips on them you realize their idea of a red lip is my idea of pink. That's actually an easy fix. Lipstick wipes off. What if she says she wants a soft, smokey grey eye? Hand her the mirror and she says it's too purple. Yikes! We gotta take it off and start over.

So, what is my point? Am I complaining about my brides? NO WAY! I love each and everyone of my brides, opinions and all. The point is: bring along an example from a wedding magazine or cosmetic ad to guide your makeup artist in the right direction. You take a picture of your favorite hair style to your stylist, why not do the same favor for your makeup artist? Having a concrete idea of what you do and don't like allows the makeup artist to be creative with your wedding makeup while staying within your particular vision.
